Game Rewind: The Jaguars beat the Patriots 31-20 in a game the Patriots were never seemingly in. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, the Jaguars took control and never looked back. Here are my five thoughts on the game.
1. Sluggish Start: The Patriots got off to a sluggish start. I don’t know if was the heat or the Jaguars wanting it more but the Patriots were not engaged early and fell behind 14-0. In football, we talk about weathering the storm early on the road. The Patriots certainly did not do that.
2. Offensive Woes: The Patriots were a mess offensively yesterday. There were protection issues, receivers couldn’t get open and the running game was stagnant. Falling behind didn’t help but the Patriots just couldn’t get on track offensively.
3. Defense Played Terrible: The Patriots defense played terrible. They couldn’t get consistent pressure on Blake Bortles nor could they keep him in the pocket. To make matters worse, the secondary couldn’t cover any of the Jaguars receivers vertically, particularly Keelan Cole. Once Trey Flowers and Patrick Chung left the game with concussions, the Patriots struggled even more on defense.
4. Third Down Continues to Be An Issue:The Patriots have struggled to get off the field on third down for the past four seasons. Jacksonville converted 10 of 14 third down attempts yesterday. It is just awful. The Patriots have to be able to get off the field on third down. If they cannot, they will continue to wear down and give up points.
5. We’ve Been Here Before: The Patriots have had their fair share of September clunkers so getting blown out early is nothing new. They have to move on, put this game behind them and get ready for Detroit.
