The Patriots announced on Monday that they have signed guard Shaq Mason to a five year, $50 million dollar extension. $23.5 of that is guaranteed. On the surface, that might seem like a lot of money for a guard but in reality, it is a fair market deal.
Mason has played at a pro bowl level each of the past two seasons. Despite lacking prototypical size, Mason more than makes up for it with speed and athleticism. He moves well in space and consistently blocks second and third level defenders in the open field.
Even with this massive extension, Mason is still not in the top five in annual salary at the position. Here is a list of the guards who make more than Mason per season.
Zach Martin, Cowboys: $14 million
Andrew Norwell, Jags: $13 million
Kevin Zeitler, Browns: $12 million
Keleche Osemele, Raiders: $11.7 million
Trae Turner, Panthers: $11.25 million
Gabe Jackson, Raiders: $11 million
As you can see, from a market value standpoint, this is a relatively good deal for Mason. He is considered top ten at his position and he is getting paid like it.
The Patriots don’t extend players early unless they are in their first contract and in their mid-20’s. Mason fit that criteria along with the fact that he has developed into one of the best players at his position.
Locking up Mason long term was a smart move for the Patriots. Especially if they want Tom Brady to play into his mid-40’s. He will need a quality offensive line in front of him that can protect him. Mason will be a part of that moving forward.
