If you woke up and tuned into Bill Belichick’s press conference on Tuesday morning hoping to find out who the starting quarterback would be on Sunday, you could have just hit snooze and went back to bed.
Belichick was asked multiple times, multiple different ways about the quarterback position during his 10 minute presser on Tuesday and the answer was the same each time, just presented a bit differently depending on the question.
“I’ve told all the players the same thing, be ready to go. So, hopefully they will be,” he said.
That phrase was uttered 11 times in one way, shape or form. When pushed on it a couple of different ways, Belichick stood firm, saying it’s a one day at a time process.
“Everybody needs to be ready to go. So, that’s where we are for today. Today’s Tuesday, go out there, be prepared, be ready to take advantage of their opportunities. Then, we’ll go to Wednesday…One day at a time. Today is Tuesday.”
Belichick wouldn’t even acknowledge if there is a legitimate competition taking place this week when he was asked, or if he could envision using multiple guys against the Giants.
“I’ve told everybody to be ready to go,” he said again.
So, will the decision be made based on practice?
“It’ll be based on what I think is best for the team, and I’ve told everybody to be ready to go. Hopefully they will.”
Belichick was also asked if he believes there are enough reps for all the QB’s in practice, something offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien discussed during his little bit of media availability on Monday.
“Look, at the quarterback position, you could run four times as many plays as we run and probably still not have as many reps as they’d want to have. All of the quarterbacks, they can go all day,” Belichick added. “They can take a lot of snaps, and they want to, going back to Tom [Brady] and all the other quarterbacks we’ve had. They’ll take as many snaps as we can run.”
So, it sounds like the team and media may not get a straight answer up until game time, and the situation may even remain fluid as things develop in New Jersey on Sunday afternoon.
Welcome to life as a Patriots fan in 2023.
“Well, I’ll let you know on Sunday,” Belichick added slyly, as if he’s enjoying the little game he’s playing with the position at this point.
