Patriots coach Mike Vrabel met with the assembled media on Friday ahead of the first rookie mini camp practice. Vrabel discussed several topics related to the team’s rookie minicamp and he gave an unexpected health update on defensive coordinator Terrell Williams in his opening statement.
Here are some of the things Vrabel touched on.
Rookie Acclimation: Vrabel emphasized the goal of getting the rookies acclimated to the Patriots’ program quickly so they can be ready to fully participate in Phase Two of the offseason program. He highlighted the need for rookies to absorb a significant amount of information in a short period.
Player Evaluation: When evaluating both drafted and tryout players, Vrabel mentioned looking for talent, a specific skill set, physical attributes (height, weight, speed), and the ability to quickly learn and correct mistakes. Coachability was noted as a key factor.
Terrell Williams Update: Vrabel provided an update on Defensive Coordinator Terrell Williams, stating that Williams was working through a medical condition and was away from the team but in daily communication. He mentioned that Zak Kuhr would be handling the defensive coordinating responsibilities in Williams’ absence and that they were eager for Williams to return.
Competition: Vrabel stressed the importance of creating a competitive environment at every position, where the best players would earn their spots.
Patriots rookies Will Campbell, Kyle Williams and Jared Wilson met with the media after their first practice as Patriots.
The Patriots are expected to continue rookie mini camp through the weekend before veterans return next week.
