The former UCLA/Arizona State product is an interesting value pick for the Patriots in the seventh round. At 6-2 195, Lucien has terrific size and ball skills. He is a straight line route runner who is a vertical threat. The Patriots have had great success drafting players in the seventh round. Could Lucien be the next great value pick? We’ll find out soon enough. Here is my scouting report on Devin Lucien.
1. Hands: Lucien has good not great hands. He can catch the ball better vertically than he can underneath. Lucien has strong hands when going up for a jump ball.
2. Patterns: Lucien runs good vertical routes. He can separate on the post, fade and comeback. He rounds his cuts on timing routes and he doesn’t have a great feel for underneath routes. He needs to do a better job of consistently sitting down versus zone coverage. Not a great double move route runner.
3. Receive Long & Short: Lucien is more of a straight line vertical threat. He is a long strider who can separate on vertical routes. He needs to be a better underneath route runner. He’s got too big a frame to not be effective on slant routes and in cuts.
4. Run After the Catch: Lucien can separate after the catch. He is a long strider who can take a five yard catch and go fifty yards. A game breaker in the open field.
5. Blocker: Lucien works hard as a blocker. He moves well laterally and sustain blocks. He’s a worker in this area.
6. Release: Lucien gets off high in his release and he gets routinely re-routed. He needs to improve in this area.
7. React to Ball/Crowd: Lucien is not afraid to go into a crowd to get the ball. He has strong hands in traffic.
8. Initial Quickness: Lucien is not sudden. He has build up speed but he’s not a quick twitch receiver.
