Amid rumors and speculation that Danny Amendola might get cut at some point this off-season, the veteran receivers re-worked his contract for the second time in two years. Amendola was suppose to count $6 million against the cap in 2016. Instead, he will make $7.35 million over the next two seasons and could make an additional $750,000 in incentives and catch bonuses.
Restructuring his deal with the Patriots will give Amendola temporary job security but there’s no guarantee he makes the team out of training camp. With the additions of Chris Hogan, Nate Washington, Malcolm Mitchell and Devin Lucien, the competition at wide receiver will be stiff. Bill Belichick and the offensive coaching staff will have to make a couple of tough calls in terms of who to cut at the end of camp.
Amendola does have two things going for him. He knows the offense and he returns kicks. That makes him valuable and it gives him an edge over Washington and Lucien. Belichick loves versatility, so he will take that into account when determining Amendola’s future in New England. I give Amendola credit. He loves being here and he understands its a business. If he wants to stay here however, he needs to start producing because eventually, he will get cut.
