New England’s newest receiver KJ Osborn isn’t delusional. He knows being a part of a rebuilding organization is going to be difficult.
Still, he wants to be a part of the solution.
On Wednesday morning, Osborn met with the media virtually for the first time and was asked about the current state of the franchise and his decision to sign here.
“It’s going to be a grind,” he acknowledged. “Oh yeah, it’s going to be a grind. Obviously, last year wasn’t the best year. Obviously, it stops with the top down. We’ve got a great owner, a great head coach and it starts with the quarterback position. Then, all the guys around him making that guy better, making that guy feel comfortable, offense, defense, special teams and we build.
“It doesn’t happen over night and I know what I signed up for. It’s going to be a grind and I want to be a person that helps this organization get back to where it needs to be.”
Osborn also talked about his early interactions with Robert Kraft, Jerod Mayo and some familiarity he has with some teammates.
He also reiterated several times that he’s hoping to get going on some film work on the team issued iPads as soon as possible.
“I went on the visit…I signed (Tuesday), it was amazing, man. It felt like home,” he said. “They had so much hospitality. I felt the love, they made it feel like home, man. That was pretty special. I met Coach Mayo, spoke to him. Real down to earth guy. Obviously, as a former player, he was real cool, easy to talk to. I was able to meet Robert Kraft. I thought that was pretty cool, I’m an entrepreneur myself. So, just being able to meet someone like that was pretty cool.
“All the support staff. There was a couple coaches that was there. Some of them are on the road, so I spoke to some of them through text and I have some calls set up throughout the week, so not too many of the positions coaches. We just kind of dibble and dabbled just talking ball, not too much detail yet…I’m hungry. I’m ready to get to it. I’m trying to get my iPad.”
As far as where he feels like he fits in on the depth chart, it’s tough to say. Obviously, the draft could provide another set or two of hands in the room, but whatever the organization needs, Osborn will do, whether he’s the No. 1 or the No. 4 receiver.
“At the end of the day, it’s wherever the team best needs me to win,” he added. “I’m excited about the opportunity. We’ll see what happens as far as with all the details of it, but again, I’m more so just excited about the opportunity. I’m a team guy. Whatever the team needs me to do to win, whether that’s being No. 1 or or that’s being a leader, play inside, play outside, that’s what I’m here to do.”
Perhaps above all else, Mayo and Wolf have clearly focused on bringing in good character guys. Osborn is looking forward to embracing the locker room leader role.
“I take pride in knowing my teammates so I can help them, they can help me and we can win games together,” Osborn said. “Football or not, that’s just who I am as a person. I try to carry myself first-class. I’m a man of faith and I try to make everybody better around me. Whether that’s on the field or off the field. Just being myself, man. Whether that’s my role or not, that’s what the Patriots are going to get.
“That’s who I am. Always just trying to elevate everyone else around me. I want the best out of myself, so I expect my teammates to push me in that way and I’ll push them in that way. Then, we all come together and that’s how you win games, you build a good locker room and things like that.
“The Patriots are getting a first-class person and this is a first-class organization. I was up there with Robert Kraft and he showed me all the Super Bowls and everything, you see Tom every where. It’s a winning tradition, so I want to help them get back to that.”
