New England Big Game Predictions for Week 9

Great list of games this weekend at all three levels. Here are this week’s big game predictions.

High School

Massachusetts

St. John’s Prep at Catholic Memorial: The Knights are coming off a blowout loss to St. John’s (Shrewsbury) and things don’t get any easier this week. St. John’s Prep is in the driver’s seat for the top seed in Division 1. The Knights have had the upper hand in this rivalry in recent years but the Prep has turned the tables and they continue their strong play this season with a win tonight. Pick: St. John’s

Mansfield at King Philip: Two terrific programs competing for Division 3 seeding and the Hockomock Davenport. It’s great to see the teams on the same side of the league again. KP’s Ethan O’Connell has been one of the breakout stars this fall. Expect another fist fight in a phone booth. Mukala’s Pick: KP

Andover at Tewksbury: Fun final tune up for the Merrimack Valley powers. A win for Tewksbury would vault the Redmen into the same tier as Scituate heading into the D4 tournament. Andover has been a great story this season and they will surprise teams in the D1 playoffs, but Tewksbury is at another level. Pick: Tewksbury

Danvers at Peabody: Danvers has smothered opponents this season. Peabody’s Dominik Mercier is the most dynamic offensive player the Falcons have seen. Won’t matter. Danvers ability to run the ball and play great D will be the difference. Pick: Danvers

Natick at Walpole: After a slow start to the season, Natick is playing well ahead of the Division 1 playoffs. These two teams almost always play tight games against one another. Expect another one this season with the Timberwolves pulling it out in the end. Pick: Walpole

North Attleborough at Foxborough: The North Attleboro ground game is lethal, particular with Nick O’Brien back in the fold. The Red Rocketeets are still in the mix for a share of the Hockomock Davenport title. Foxborough has not played as well as they have in recent years, but it is still a playoff team and anything can happen in the Hockomock. Expect another doozy between these two long time rivals. I’m leaning North. Pick: North Attleboro

Bishop Feehan at La Salle: Feehan head coach Bryan Pinabell recently announced he will retire at season’s end. Now that the Shamrocks are qualified for the postseason, how many more games will Pinabell’s impressive career last? I expect quite a few but tonight, I am taking the Rams. Pick: LaSalle

Ludlowe at New Canaan: Ludlowe has been one of the pleasant surprises in Connecticut this fall. Still, New Canaan is one of the standard bearers and enter as the favorite. Ludlowe might hang for a half but New Canaan pulls away late. Pick: New Canaan

St. Sebastian’s at BB&N: Mike Willey’s BB&N squad is impressive. The Knights can beat you in a variety of ways. Hudson transfer Dom Chaves is a terror on the defensive line. Expect another close game between these two with the Knights pulling away in the second half. Pick: BB&N

College

Boston College at Duke: The Eagles are rolling thanks to an explosive running and opportunistic defense. Beating Duke won’t be easy as the Blue Devils are fundamentally sound and they do not beat themselves. It will be close but the Eagles will find a way to pull it out late. Pick: Boston College

UConn at Air Force: The Huskies will have their hands full with the Air Force flexbone triple option offense but I think they can win this game if they play mistake free and win the turnover battle. It will be close but the Huskies have disappointed in these spots before. I am going with Air Force and hoping UConn wins. Pick: Air Force

Bryant at Monmouth: Bryant needs this game if they are going to stay in title contention in the CAA. The defense will have to play well for them to get it down. I think they do but it won’t be enough. I’m going with Monmouth. Pick: Monmouth

Richmond at Holy Cross: The Crusaders are playing so much better now than they were earlier in the season and are still technically in the Patriot League title hunt. Richmond is good however and a win will not be that easy to come by. Give me the Spiders. Pick: Richmond

Notre Dame at Navy: The Notre Dame, Navy rivalry makes its way to Gillette Stadium. It should be a good game for a half but C.J Carr and company are just too talented. Give me the Irish by two scores tonight. Pick: Notre Dame

Patriots

Patriots at Dolphins: Old friend Jeff Hafley has the Dolphins playing well but I do not think they are playing well enough to beat the Patriots. As long as the Patriots take care of the football and protect Drake Maye, they should be fine. Give me the Patriots. Pick: Patriots
