The transformation of the Cranston East football program under Head Coach Jimmy Cook is a story rooted in culture, accountability, and a deep respect for tradition. Turning around a program that had struggled to find its footing takes time, but in his third year at the helm, Coach Cook has established a clear vision that is now paying off on the field. The Thunderbolts are 8-0 as they head into their showdown against undefeated East Greenwich on Friday night.

Building a winning culture does not happen overnight, and Cook says the turnaround began with a foundation rooted in setting high standards every single day.

“I think the difference has been the maturity of players, this is our third year season. We have clear expectations of our team. Those expectations are routinely passed onto our team daily,” Cook explained.

That shift in mindset is most evident during weekly preparations. High-intensity practices driven by upperclassmen have created an environment where players push one another to meet those expectations.

“Our practice tempo has been a major part of our success, Led by our juniors and seniors. We expect the players to hold each other accountable for their actions on and off the field. Their leadership has been outstanding,” said Cook.

Led by dual threat Junior quarterback Gavin Boylan, the Thunderbolts are back to being a respected program in the Ocean State. Boylan leads a talented junior group that has been bolstered by a committed senior class that has bought in and allowed Cook and his staff to bring the program back to prominence.

Restoring the program also meant reconnecting with the rich history of Thunderbolt football. Cook says in order to restore a program with rich history of success, you have to change the mindset of the players.

“Cranston East has had a long tradition of success going back to the 1970’s. Taking over a team that didn’t have much success is very difficult. Changing the practice habits and mindset played a major role in our recent success,”

As the wins have piled up, the impact has extended far beyond the locker room, revitalizing the energy throughout the hallways and across the town.

“Our success has brought more interest in our program in our school and community. I am proud to say I am the head coach of the Cranston East Thunderbolts,” Cook says.

While the program’s turnaround has been remarkable, the ultimate objective remains firmly in sight. Coach Cook and the Thunderbolts know that sustained success requires unwavering discipline down the stretch.

“Going forward, We will need our players and coaches to stay focused on our end goal to win the Division III Super Bowl by continuing to work hard in practice and play well. We have a saying ‘Practice well, Play well, Celebrate well,” Cook emphasized.

Through hard work and renewed pride, Cranston East is once again carving out a proud legacy on the football field and they hope to continue that Friday night against East Greenwich.
