As Jordan Stevens enters year No. 3 at the helm of the Maine football program, it feels like a fork-in-the-road type season for the Black Bears.
Progress has been made, but the steps forward now need to result in more wins. Stevens has surrounded himself with some great people that are all pulling in the same direction to bring respect back to the program, and on Tuesday, Stevens announced that a few of those staff members received some pretty big promotions.
Mikahael Waters was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Umberto Di Meo has been promoted to defensive coordinator. Spencer Carey is moving to cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator.
John Gardner will coach wide receivers and also serve arguably the most important role as recruiting coordinator. Dave Bucar will still be coaching the offensive line while also taking on the role of run game coordinator. Pushuan Brown is overseeing the running backs and is also serving as assistant special teams coordinator and ‘pro liaison.’
McCormick Stephenson – who was Stevens’ offensive quality control coach last season – will coach the tight ends. There’s also one new addition. AJ McLaughlin is joining the Black Bears from Husson University and will coach the outside linebackers.
“Maine Football is known for the development of people and I’m thrilled to see the growth of our staff over the past year,” Stevens said. “Coaching football at Maine demands a love of the game and a selfless attitude in which all or our coaches possess.”
Here’s what Stevens had to say about Waters, Di Meo and Carey:
On Waters:
“Mikahael has earned the promotion to offensive coordinator. Mikahael will continue to develop our offense in the run and pass game.”
On Di Meo:
“Umberto knows how to develop a plan and execute that plan. He is a clear and concise teacher and effective communicator. Umberto has built strong relationships with the players and brought structure and accountability to their lives.”
On Carey:
“Spencer’s growth has been recognizable over the past two years. Spencer has a depth of knowledge for the kicking game and will develop our players technically and fundamentally.”
