For Tyandre Monteiro-Cooper, football wasn’t an immediate obsession; it was a craft that had to be unlocked. What began as a game eventually transformed into a life-defining pursuit, fueled by a realization of his own potential and an undeniable desire to compete under the bright lights of high school sports.
“I decided to commit to playing football because I could see that if I just put in a lot of hard work I could be able to get an opportunity to play at an elite level in college on scholarship,” Monteiro-Cooper said. “Football is just a great game that is a mix of strategy, discipline, willpower, brotherhood that I wanted to be apart of and i always wanted to play in Friday night lights!”
That relentless work ethic has paid massive dividends. Especially when it comes to recruiting. The recruiting process has moved fast, culminating in a major decision that solidifies his future before his senior campaign even kicks off.
“This past offseason has been very fast and exciting,” Monteiro-Cooper shared. “Currently I am committed to Stonehill College!”
The commitment to Stonehill underscores the importance of football and getting an education for Monteiro-Cooper.
While his college decision is secured, Monteiro-Cooper enters his final high school season with unfinished business. His eyes are set on dynamic individual milestones and ultimate team success, anchoring a defense with high expectations.
“Personal Goals. I want to be an All-Scholastic, All-State Super 26, Shriners All-Star. finish with 12 sacks, 30 TFL’s and 60 solo tackles,” he noted. “My team goals are undisputed Bay State League champions, an Elite 8 appearance, and a win in the Thanksgiving game against Walpole!”
A pivotal force behind Monteiro-Cooper’s development is Weymouth Head Coach Mike Donovan. Donovan recognized the raw talent within the defensive standout early on, demanding more from Monteiro-Cooper as he fully embraced the sport himself.
“You saw the upside with Tyandre. He has all the tools you need to succeed and he has taken advantage of them. He has grown so much as a person and as a player.”
For his part, Monteiro-Cooper credits Donovan with changing his life because he was demanding.
“Coach Donovan has completely changed my life for the better,” Monteiro-Cooper reflected. “My freshman and sophomore years, he knew I didn’t have a strong love for football yet and he continued to push me as hard as could to become the best player and young man I can. He always saw the innate abilities I had and he believed in how far I could go as a football player but knew that the work had to be put in. He instilled hard work, discipline, and grit into me and for that I’m so grateful to have him.”
That personal mentorship mirrors the overall shift in the Weymouth program. Under Donovan’s leadership, the team has shifted standard expectations, elevating the entire community while setting up players like Monteiro-Cooper for Division I college opportunities.
“Coach Donovan from the minute he stepped into the program, he changed the culture and the team to be better,” Monteiro-Cooper added. “With his collegiate coaching experience, he built the program from mediocrity to undisputed Bay State Champs and the entire Weymouth football community is grateful to have him.”
The Wildcats are primed to make another title run with Monteiro-Cooper leading the way.
