FOXBOROUGH – It’s a big week for Mike Vrabel and his staff, but it’s an even bigger week for the young Patriots roster.
If you’re lucky enough to be sitting inside Gillette Stadium for the opener on Sunday, you’re going to see a lot of newcomers that could and should have a big impact on the team, some rookies, some second or third-year guys.
The most important thing for those young players this week is making sure they aren’t overwhelmed or trying to cram too much information into their minds before the ball kicks off.
During his first bit of weekly availability on Monday, I asked Vrabel about that specifically. What can he do to make sure guys’ heads aren’t spinning around 1:00 on Sunday?
“I think we have to put a lot of work in before the game, certainly,” he said. “Not sure what they’re going to be in. There’s going to be a lot of unknowns and there’s going to be a lot of things that come up in that game that none of us are going to be sure about. Whether that’s Will (Campbell) or TreVeyon (Henderson) or any other young player that we have or any veteran player. There’s going to be things that happen. We have to be poised. We have to keep our composure. It’s going to be emotional. I want it to be emotional. I want them to be excited and we have to build for Sunday.
“There’s going to be things that come up. We’ll have to go onto the next play and figure out what that situation calls for and try to keep our composure the best that we can. Whether that’s after a positive play or that’s after a negative play.”
