FOXBOROUGH – One of the most important free agent signings the Patriots made this offseason was guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Vera-Tucker is a pro’s pro at just 27 years old as he enters fifth NFL season. Vera-Tucker missed all of 2025 with a torn tricep just days before Week 1.

When healthy, he’s as good as it gets up front. Vera-Tucker has played in and started 43 games in his career, all spent down in New York with the Jets. Now, his presence should make life a little easier for Will Campbell with such a good communicator next to him.

On Sunday when offensive line coach Doug Marrone sat down with the media for a few minutes, I asked him how he’s enjoyed working with Vera-Tucker so far.

“I’ve enjoyed working with him and communicating. I think it’s always great when you come in as a coach and you bring in a veteran player that’s had success,” he said. “How do you continue it? How do you build back on…maybe some of the time he missed as a player? Then, really creating that relationship and creating that communication.

“The biggest thing for me with players is trying to create a communication and understand that ‘hey, listen, my job is just to get you better.’ I may say things a little bit differently…’how did you do things before? What did you think of this? What’d you like to do? Hey, this is what we do.’ Those conversations have been going on.

“I feel really comfortable in the position I’m in as a coach being able to communicate with him and trying to help him become a better football player.”

Assuming health, it’s not hyperbole to say that Vera-Tucker could be one of the most important pieces of the offensive puzzle if New England is going to make another Super Bowl run in 2026.
