The New England Patriots have officially ushered in a new era, naming six captains for the 2025 season as voted by their teammates. The group, a mix of veteran experience and youthful energy, reflects the new identity being forged under head coach Mike Vrabel.

Earning the honor for the first time is second-year quarterback Drake Maye, who will lead the offense alongside veteran tight end Hunter Henry. On the defensive side, the captaincy is shared by two new additions—linebacker Robert Spillane and edge rusher Harold Landry III—along with versatile defensive back Marcus Jones. Rounding out the group is special teams ace Brenden Schooler.

Offense:

Drake Maye (QB): Maye’s ascent to a leadership role is a testament to his impressive development. After a solid rookie season and a strong offseason, the 2024 first-round pick has embraced the challenge of leading the new-look Patriots offense. His teammates have clearly taken notice of his work ethic and commanding presence.

Hunter Henry (TE): A familiar face in the Patriots’ leadership hierarchy, Henry is a captain for the third consecutive year. His consistency, professionalism, and reliable hands have made him a respected voice in the locker room and a key part of the offense. Henry’s commitment to the community was also recently recognized with the 2025 Ron Burton Community Service Award.

Defense:

Robert Spillane (LB): Signed in free agency from the Las Vegas Raiders, where he was a captain for two seasons, Spillane brings proven leadership to the Patriots’ front seven. His no-nonsense approach and experience as a “green dot” linebacker are expected to anchor the defense.

Harold Landry III (LB): Another key offseason acquisition, Landry brings a winning pedigree and a strong connection to Coach Vrabel from their time together in Tennessee. His pass-rushing prowess and relentless motor have quickly set a new standard for the defensive line.

Marcus Jones (CB): Known for his explosive energy and versatility, Jones has earned the captaincy for the first time. Whether on defense or special teams, his infectious enthusiasm and playmaking ability have made him a player his teammates can rally around.

Special Teams:

Brenden Schooler (S): Schooler’s selection as a captain for the second time in his career speaks volumes about his impact. A 2024 All-Pro special teamer, he embodies the “do whatever it takes” mentality and has become a core piece of the Patriots’ culture.

The selection of these six players marks a clear shift for the franchise. With the departure of several longtime veterans who previously held captaincy roles—including Jabrill Peppers and Ja’Whaun Bentley—this new group of leaders is poised to define the team’s identity moving forward. The blend of seasoned veterans and rising stars suggests that the Patriots are building for a competitive future, grounded in the principles of hard work and team-first mentality under the new leadership of Mike Vrabel.
