The UConn Huskies football program is facing another significant roster blow following the departure of head coach Jim Mora, as star running back Cam Edwards officially announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.

Edwards’ decision, which he revealed just weeks after Mora left to take the head coaching job at Colorado State, is a major loss for the Huskies’ offense and will undoubtedly make him one of the most sought-after running backs available in the upcoming portal cycle.

Edwards, a local product from Norwalk, Connecticut, finished a historic 2025 regular season that saw him become the program’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 2019. The redshirt junior amassed a career-best 1,132 rushing yards on 199 carries and found the end zone 14 times. His contributions were central to a Huskies team that finished the season with an impressive 9-3 record and earned a bowl bid. Edwards leaves the program with 2,580 career rushing yards and 26 touchdowns over his time in Storrs.

His departure is the latest in a wave of roster changes for UConn since Mora’s exit. He joins Victor Rosa, Mel Brown, Carsten Cassidy and Ben Murkowski among those who have entered the portal.

Edwards is likely looking for a new opportunity at a program that allows him to compete at a higher-profile school for his final year of eligibility. Edwards has one year remaining to play.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound back is expected to draw immediate interest from top-tier programs across the country, given his proven production and ability to carry a heavy workload. Speculation is already swirling about a potential reunion with his former head coach, Jim Mora, at Colorado State, but Edwards’ talent ensures that he will draw plenty of suitors in the portal. For UConn, the focus now shifts to replacing their leading rusher and a critical piece of their recent success as they prepare to navigate the next era of the program under new coach Jason Candle.

Edwards is going to play in the Fenway Bowl on December 27th against Army.
