Vedarian Lowe vs. Danielle Hunter is a key match up today.
The Houston Texans are one of the most talented teams in the NFL and they present legitimate match up problems across the board.
The Patriots could have a difficult time matching up. Especially up front.
Here are five match-ups to watch in today’s game.
1. Drake Maye vs. the Texans D: The Texans will come after Maye. DeMeco Ryan’s defenses have done well against rookie quarterbacks in the past. Just go back to week two when they sacked Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams seven times.
Maye will get a lot of different looks. He needs to process quickly and get the ball out. He needs to be smart when he decides to run because this defense is physical and he will take shots.
2. Danielle Hunter vs. Vedarian Lowe: Lowe is starting to come into his own at left tackle. He is starting to play well. He will have his hands full today against one of the top pass rushers in the league in Hunter. Jump setting Hunter and cutting the edge off against him is key. If Lowe can consistently force him into a double move, he can win the match up and the Patriots will not have to help him as much in pass protection.
3. Stefan Diggs vs. Christian Gonzalez: With Nico Collins out, Gonzalez will match up against Diggs who is a tough match-up one on one in coverage. Diggs is a crafty route runner who knows how to get open and is deceptively quick. Gonzalez will need to be fundamentally sound today and he cannot take chances. He needs to stay in phase and change direction quickly against Diggs who uncovers as good as any receiver in the league.
4. Texans tight ends vs. Patriots safeties: Houston will utilize their tight ends a lot today. Expect both Dalton Schultz and Cade Stover to get a lot of targets. Patriots safeties will need to do a good job of reading releases and matching up, especially on underneath routes to the flat. Houston likes to check release their tight ends into the flat a lot. That can be tough on safeties trying to differentiate between run and pass.
5. Joe Mixon vs. the Patriots linebackers: Mixon is back after missing the past three games. He is a big, physical back who runs with good contact balance for his size and can break tackles. Jahlani Tavai, Raekwon McMillan and the rest of the Patriots linebackers will need to make the right reads, shoot the right gaps and wrap up on contact. Mixon breaks a lot of tackles.
