Seven points on the Patriots 38-3 loss to the Cowboys

The Patriots suffered the worst loss of Bill Belichick’s coaching career on Sunday losing 38-3 to the Dallas Cowboys.
Here are seven points on today’s game.

1. Mac was awful- Jones played his worst game as a Patriot. He completed 12-of-21 passes for 150 yards and two interceptions, one of which was a pick six. Jones also fumbled inside the Patriots 20 yard line which resulted in a scoop and score. It almost seemed like he quit and that is not good.

2. Injuries to Gonzalez and Judon- We found out earlier tonight that Judon has a torn bicep tendon and is more than likely done for the season. Gonzalez injured his shoulder and could be out for a while. Losing 38-3 is one thing. Losing two of your three top defensive players is even worse.

3. Running game was non-existent- The Arizona Cardinals rushed for 226 yards against Dallas last week. The Patriots needed to run the football effectively in order to win this game and they managed a meager 53 yards rushing in this game. That is pathetic. The offense has a lot of issues right now. The inability to run the football is at the top of the list.

4. Offensive line struggles again- When your best offensive lineman commits multiple penalties, you know it is going to be a long day. The offensive line struggled again, specifically Michael Onwenu. This unit is just not in sync right now. They are too inconsistent and it is a major problem. I honestly don’t know how you fix at this point? You can only do so many things schematically.

5. Defense plays will enough to win- The defense once again played well enough to win but when your offense is only on the field for 55 snaps, you cannot win. The defense conversely was on the field for 69 snaps. That is too big a discrepancy. The offense must find a way to posses the ball more. They were averaging 75 snaps a game coming into Sunday but they could not string any drives together. It was just a bad day.

6. Zappe comes in- Zappe replaced Jones with 3:41 left in the third quarter. Belichick was asked after the game why he pulled Jones and he said that there was no point in keeping him in the game. Zappe was no better completing 4-of-9 for 57 yards. Please spare me the quarterback competition stuff. Zappe isn’t an upgrade over Jones so let’s stop pretending he is.

7. Zeke’s return- Elliott was emotional in his return to Dallas but unfortunately he didn’t do much for the Patriots. He played 22 snaps and rushed for 16 on 6 carries. He caught 2 passes for 6 yards. Needless to say, it was a forgettable performance for Elliott and the Patriots.
