Seven Points on the Patriots 34-0 Loss to the New Orleans Saints

The Patriots suffered a humiliating 34-0 loss at home this afternoon to the New Orleans Saints. Nothing seemingly went right in a game that got away from the Patriots early. Today’s loss is arguably the worst of Bill Belichick’s tenure. It was the Patriots worst home loss since 1969. The Patriots are 1-4 for the first time since 2000. Nothing is going right with this team.

Here are my seven points on today’s loss.

1.Offense was ugly once again: The offense was bad once again. The Patriots got shutout and have not scored a touchdown in ten quarters. They haven’t seen the end zone in 34 straight drives. Hideous numbers.  The running game couldn’t get on track once again and Mac Jones struggled with his accuracy and turning the ball over. As an offense, the Patriots only had 156 yards of total offense. Unreal.

2. Mac struggles continue: Jones was atrocious. He threw a pick six in the second quarter (his third this season) and seemed out of sorts once again. He is seeing and feeling pressure and when that happens to a quarterback, they cannot function within the offense. Jones completed 12-of-22 passes for 110 yards and two interceptions. He was eventually benched for Bailey Zappe in the fourth quarter.

3. Defense once again plays too many snaps: Despite being without Matthew Judon and Christian Gonzalez, the defense played well enough in the first half to at least give the Patriots a chance to win this game. Unfortunately, they played too many snaps and it showed. The Saints ran 19 more plays and had a two to one advantage in time of possession (39:34-20:26) The defense wore out, especially as the game went on. New Orleans was able to move the ball and outscored the Patriots 13-0 in the second half.

4. Turnovers were a problem: The Patriots turned the ball over three times today. All three scores resulted in points for the Saints. You cannot give teams in the NFL extra possessions or a short field to work with. Unfortunately, the Patriots did it twice today and the Saints made them pay. The Patriots are turning the ball over more than they did a year ago and they are not generating nearly enough turnovers. It is a real problem right now.

5. Douglas, JuJu and Onwenu all hurt: As if it wasn’t enough that the Patriots got blown out at home, they also lost three players to injury today. Demario Douglas left the game in the first half with a head injury. Michael Onwenu left the game in the first half with an ankle injury and JuJu Smith-Schuster left the game with a head injury in the second half. The Patriots are already struggling with the guys they have on the field. It could get worse if any of these three players have to sit out in the coming weeks.

6. How do you fix this offense? I do not know how you fix it at this point? The Patriots were better offensively last season. I know that is hard to believe given the issues they had, but they were. Through five games this season, the Patriots are averaging 11 points per game. Through five games a year ago at this time, they were averaging 20.6 points per game. There is not much you can do to fix this offense right now. I guess you keep grinding and hope that the light comes on but I would not hold my breathe.

7. Zappe Hour: Bailey Zappe relieved Jones in the fourth quarter and wasn’t any better. He had trouble hitting open receivers in stride and looked out of sorts. Zappe reportedly got more first team reps this week but it did not look like it. Zappe completed 3-of-9 passes for 22 yards.
