The Patriots went into Pittsburgh and knocked off the Steelers, 21-18. After struggling offensively the past three weeks, the Patriots scored 21 first half points and held on for the win. The defense was good as usual keeping the Steelers offense in check for most of the game.
Here are my seven points on this game.
1. Zappe shines: Bailey Zappe was on fire in the first half and despite cooling off in the second half, still finished 19-of-28 for 240 yards and 3 touchdown passes. Zappe showed that he is willing to play within the system and take care of the ball, despite throwing an interception in the second half.
2. Henry’s big night: It was Hunter Henry’s birthday and he shined on his big day catching two touchdown passes. The tight ends have been an afterthought in this offense all season long. It was nice to see them count again. It was by necessity but the tight ends once again played a vital role in the offense, specifically Henry.
3. Zeke the Freak: Ezekiel Elliott looked like his old self rushing for 68 yards on 22 carries and catching 7 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. I have been saying it all season. Zeke still has gas in the tank. I would re-sign if he is willing to stay. It will not be easy. He will have a market but Elliott is terrific complement to Rhamondre Stevenson.
4. He’s got the JuJu: Juju Smith-Schuster had his best game as a Patriot. Ironically enough, it took him returning to Pittsburgh in order to do it. Smith-Schuster only finished with 4 catches for 90 yards but he is make a spectacular grab for 37 yards down the right side line. For the first time all season, Smith-Schuster finally looks healthy.
5. Defense makes plays when it counts: The defense played well in spot. They did not play as well as they did the previous three weeks but when they needed to get stops, they got them. Especially in the fourth quarter. It was nice to see the offense finally do enough to support them.
6. Patriots still playing hard: Say what you want about this season, the Patriots are still playing hard. That is a testament to Bill Belichick and his coaching staff. They are getting the buy in and I know some people may not want to hear this, but that counts for something.
7. Draft position unchanged: Despite winning, the Patriots still have the number two pick in April’s draft. It was a good night all night. They picked up a much needed win and maintained the desired pick.
