The Patriots swung two trades for offensive line depth on. Sunday. New England traded running back Pierre Strong to the Cleveland Browns for offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr.
Bill Belichick wasn’t done adding to the Patriots depleted offensive line. He then traded a 2024 sixth round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for offensive tackle Vedarian Lowe. Lowe played for former Patriots assistant Bret Bielema at Illinois.
In Wheatley, they got a 26 year old offensive tackle who played his college ball at Michigan. Wheatley is on his fourth team in three years. He also played in the now-defunct Spring League in 2021. Wheatley has yet to make his regular-season NFL debut but he has good length and can play both left and right tackle.
Lowe is in his second season in the NFL. The 24 year old stands at 6-6 320 and can play both offensive tackle spots as well. He played 33 snaps at left tackle for the Vikings in Week 18 last season. He also played 20 snaps on special teams.
Both should step in provide some depth to an offensive line that banged up right now. The Patriots did address the offensive line this off-season signing veterans Riley Reiff and Calvin Anderson and drafting three offensive lineman. However thanks to injuries and inexperience, the group has struggled.
Strong, 24 was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Patriots. After showing flashes of potential last season, he was never able to get on track. With a crowded running back room, the Patriots were able to fortify the offensive line by trading from a position of strength.
