Patriots Top 50 Prospects: #42: Hasaan Hypolite, LB/S, Houston

Hypolite was a three time captain for the Cougars. He started his career at Colorado before transferring to Houston. In 12 games last season, he had 33 total tackles and one tackle for loss. His numbers don’t jump out at you but like Marte Mapu in last year’s draft, Hypolite is a hybrid linebacker/safety who can play in all three levels and play a variety of roles.

Here is my scouting report on Hasaan Hypolite.

Hassan Hypolite, HY, 5-11 215, Houston

Man to Man Coverage: Average man coverage defender. Better served playing in zone where he is more instinctual and he can read routes and adjust in space.

Zone Coverage: More comfortable in zone coverage. Hypolite has good feet and flips his hips with ease to stay in phase. Specially aware. He does a good job of recognizing routes and matching up.

Key & Diagnose: Hypolite does a good job of reading the quarterback and anticipating routes in his area in zone coverages. Understands formation alignment and fitting in against the run.

Lateral Pursuit: Takes good angles and knows how to work around blocks. Has decent closing speed but this is where his lack of vertical speed comes into play.

Tackling: Finishes in contact. Hypolite breaks down consistently and has the uppper strength necessary to take ball carriers down. Needs to take better angles. Gets stuck against ball carriers who are shifty and can make him miss.

Pass Drop/Pass Coverage: Hypolite has a clean, fluid drop. He naturally flips his hips and transitions well. Has quiet feet in back pedal and he does a good job of planting and driving on the ball. He has decent hands but his lack of turnovers speaks to the fact that he needs to improve in this area.

Final Report: Hypolite is not a player that is on a lot of people’s radar but the Patriots seem to like him as evidence by their pro day meeting. He is a true three level hybrid player in the mold of Marte Mapu but he is not the same athlete.

Draft Range: 7th-UDFA
