Patriots Pulse Rewind: Patriots 30 Lions 28

By John Sarianides

Game Rewind: After going up 24-0 in the first half, the Patriots rallied to beat the Lions 30-28 on a last second field goal. Of course, the story of the night is the injury suffered by Julien Edelman.

Here are five thoughts from last night’s game.

1. Edelman Injury: The Patriots fear that Julian Edelman may have a torn ACL could be confirmed today after the star wide out has an MRI. Edelman hurt himself in the first quarter trying to make a cut. It was from the beginning that it could be an ACL because of the way his left knee buckled and the fact that he could walk on it.

2. Starters Dominate: The starters dominated the Lions starters in the first half. The Patriots opened the game on a 7 play, 75 yard drive that was culminated with a Brady to Chris Hogan 7 yard touchdown pass. Brady finished 12/15 for 174 yards, two touchdown passes and an interception on the night. Brady is ready to go so it is highly unlikely we see him in the pre-season finale.

3. Gillislee Debut: Mike Gillislee made his Patriots debut last night. Gillislee carried the ball 8 times for 38 yards and a touchdown. Most of Gillislee’s yardage came on a 27 yard run but he looked healthy and comfortable playing in the Patriots offense.

4. Defense Comtinues to Struggle: The defense had some bright spots in the first half but poor tackling, lack of communication and an inability to get off the field on third down were once again major issues for them. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and his staff have a lot to work on before the season opener.

5. Hogan is a Hero: With Edelman more than likely done for the season, the Patriots are going to need their other receivers to step it up. Chris Hogan did that last night. Hogan caught 4 passes for 70 yards and scored two touchdowns. Half of Hogan’s yards came on a 32 yard pass play but Brady did target Hogan 5 times.
