In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Tom Brady addressed several different topics including the end of his career, his relationship with Bill Belichick and the anthem protests. Regarding his career, Brady readily admitted he sees the end coming.
“I think I’m seeing that there’s definitely an end coming, sooner rather than later.”
The admission was telling, especially in light of what has happened this off-season. Brady also admitted that he thinks about it more than he used.
While this may make Patriots fans cringe, Brady is turning 41 in August. As much as he talks about playing into his mid forties, the reality is, Brady is getting older and has different priorities in his life than he did when he was 25.
“As long as I’m still loving it. As long as I’m loving the training and preparation, and willing to make the commitment. But it’s also — I think what I’ve alluded to a lot in the docuseries was there’s other things happening in my life, too. I do have kids that I love, and I don’t want to be a dad that’s not there driving my kids to their games.”
Football can be all consuming. Sure, the fire is there now but football gets harder physically and mentally as you get older. Brady is honest when he says that family will ultimately drive the decision for him to step away from the game. Family comes first to Brady and that was abundantly obvious in Tom vs. Time.
Winfrey also asked Brady if there was something going on regarding his relationship with coach Bill Belichick. Brady’s response was a standard team first response.
“Um, no. I mean, I love him,” Brady said of Belichick (via the Boston Herald). “I love that he’s an incredible coach, mentor for me, and he’s pushed me in a lot of ways.
“Like everything, we don’t agree on absolutely everything. That’s relationships.”
Right. Thanks for pissing in my ear and telling me it is raining Tom. Obviously there is friction in the relationship. That was evident this off-season. I thought Brady was pretty open and candid up until this point and then he took a page out of the Patriot Way playbook and gave a cookie cutter response to the question.
Overall, I thought the interview was pretty revealing. Brady is clearly mapping out the end of his career. He knows that the end is near. One has to wonder if he would have walked away had the Patriots beat the Eagles? I think winning a sixth Super Bowl is what drives him. Then again, it is Tom Brady. He always says his favorite ring is the next one. He probably wants two more. Either way, the interview shed some light on what Brady thinks about his future in the NFL.
