Patriots Pulse Blog: The Patriots Cannot Give Up the Farm for Josh Rosen

The Patriots are rumored to be interested in UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen. By all accounts the interest on the Patriots part is genuine. There is only one problem. Rosen is expected to be drafted within the first five picks.

If the Patriots want to draft Rosen, they would have to jump into the top five. The Giants, Browns and Broncos would all be willing trade partners if the return was right. The problem is, the Patriots pick in the bottom third of the first round. Picks 23 and 31 might be too far a drop for any of those teams to consider making a deal.

Conversely, if you are Bill Belichick, you have to think long and hard about whether or not Josh Rosen is worth giving up two first rounders, a second round pick and possibly more. For a team that is a Super Bowl contender and primed to make another run, giving up multiple picks in the first two rounds for Tom Brady’s successor isn’t exactly a sound business decision.

Drafting a young quarterback in this draft is a priority for the Patriots. However, giving up multiple picks to get that quarterback doesn’t make sense. Not while the championship window is stillI open. I understand finding Brady’s heir apparent is important but not at the cost that it would take to move up to draft Rosen.

Belichick hardly ever tries to move up in the draft. While I am sure he likes Rosen as a player, I cannot see him giving up multiple picks to jump up 18 to 20 spots to draft him. Teams like the Bills who need a quarterback, are better positioned to move up than the Patriots are.

I am sure some Patriots fans are clamoring for the “Rosen One” and would love to see the Patriots trade up and draft him. However they have to ask themselves. What is more important? Competing for another Super Bowl or drafting Brady’s successor? My guess is they would pick the latter. My point is, the Patriots should stand pat in the first round and draft two impact players. It is the most sensible thing to do.

I am sure the Patriots like Rosen and would be interested in him if he fell to them but that’s not going to happen. So the Patriots will move on and use this draft to fill other needs on the roster. Belichick doesn’t have a choice. Giving up the farm for Rosen is just simply not worth it.
