Vincent Valentine is massive at 6-4 330. He can play the three technique defensive tackle, the shade defensive tackle or nose tackle. Valentine is raw but there is no question he has some potential upside. Bill Belichick loves defensive tackles that two gap and re-create the line of scrimmage. Valentine can do that. Here is my scouting report on Vincent Valentine.
Vs. the Run: Valentine is strong at the point of attack. He can control offensive lineman, stack them and shed them. He moves well in all four directions for his size and he can chase down running plays from the backside.
Pass Rush: Valentine has a explosive first step and he gets good penetration in passing situations. He is a bull and rip pass rusher but on occasion, he’ll flash some get off and win with speed.
Pursuit: Valentine moves well laterally for a big man. He can plant and chase from the backside. He doesn’t have great closing speed.
Tackling: Valentine tackles high. It’s tough to be a good tackler when you are tall but he needs to bend more when he wraps up and finishes.
Initial Quickness: As I mentioned earlier, Valentine has good initial quickness off the ball for a man his size. He needs to learn to get off with a lower pad level.
Recognition: Valentine plays with good instincts and he reads plays well. Because he plays high however, he is prone to being trapped.
Neutralize Blocks: Valentine is strong at the point of attack. He can anchor down and two gap. He dominates one on one blocks when he plays with proper leverage and bends.
Key & Diagnose: Valentine has a good feel for what opposing teams are trying to do to him. Reads a lineman’s get off and recognizes pass versus run pretty quickly.
