Patriots Pulse Blog: Scouting Report on Jacoby Brissett.

The Patriots drafted N.C State quarterback Jacoby Brissett with Pick #91 in the third round. I found this pick interesting for several reasons. For one, Brissett was recruited and played for Charlie Weis at Florida. So you know Bill Belichick talked to Weis extensively before he drafted Brissett. The other reason why this pick is interesting is because it’s proof that the Patriots are preparing for life without Tom Brady for the first four weeks of next season. Here is my scouting report on Brissett.

Arm Strength: Brissett has plus arm strength. He can push the ball down the field and put it in the right spot depending on the route.

Set-Up: Brissett is nice and quiet in his drop. He doesn’t waste steps, he’s tall in the pocket and he maintains live feet.

Accuracy: Brissett is accurate when he can set his feet and step into his throw. He is not as accurate when he’s throwing on the move.

Field Vision: Brissett didn’t do much in terms of reads at N.C State. He played in a system in which he made two reads and then looked to dump the ball down to a built in check down.

Running Ability: Brissett moves well in the pocket and he can escape through the front and back door. Brissett extends plays out of the pocket and he can hit the deep ball on the scramble drill. He runs at times when he shouldn’t. He needs to learn to slide when scrambling. Absorbs too much contact.

Delivery: Brissett has a nice compact delivery. There is no wasted motion. Brissett loads the football, locates the open receiver and gets it out quickly.

Ball Handling: Brissett does a good job on his token fakes and play-action fakes. He rushes his fakes sometimes and has a tendency to come out of his fakes tall.

Leadership: Brissett is a leader who works hard and leads by example. He is respected by his coaches and teammates. He’ll fit in with the Patriots from a character standpoint.
