Patriots Pulse Blog: Scouting Report on Joe Thuney.

Joe Thuney is a versatile offensive lineman who has played all three offensive line positions. He’s a three year starter. Here is my scouting report in Thuney.

Initial Quickness: Thuney comes off the ball quickly and establishes inside hand position on first level defenders. He does a good job of playing with eyes up on double teams and identifying flowing linebackers. He’s athletic.

Run Blocker: Thuney is technically sound as a run blocker. He gets inside hand placement on defenders and gets movement. Thuney bends naturally as a run blocker and he plays with a good pad level. Thuney is a thin up top physically so he’ll struggle on one on one blocks.

Pass Blocker: Thuney is a good short area pass blocker who moves well laterally. He does a good job of punching and recoiling. He can hold his own against bull rushers. Thuney does have a tendency to set high some times and defenders get under his pads but he is technically sound as a pass blocker.

Pull and Trap: Thuney moves well laterally. He can skip pull and fold up through B gap on the power play or he can pull and kick out a defensive end in the counter game. Thuney is an athletic in space. He can cover people up and play to the whistle.

Use of Hands: Thuney has quick hands and he does a good job of establishing inside position quickly.

Strength: Thuney is not a traditional guard. He wins with pad level, technique and athleticism. He is not a mauler. Thuney is far from a “war daddy”

Explosion: Thuney gets out of his stance quickly and establishes body position. Thuney moves well laterally and he covers up defenders in the zone running game.
