Rob Gronkowski met with the media on Saturday in a motocross promotional press conference. Gronkowski was dressed as a motor cross driver and as usual he was goofy and starving for attention.
Gronkowski was asked if he is planning on playing next season to which he responded “Uhh, maybe.” When asked what he would say to fans who are wondering if he is going to play next season, Gronkowski said “They’re going to see a freak-a-leek when I come back” He was later asked if he was planning on attending voluntary workouts, Gronkowski’s response was “no.” “I’ve got dirt biking skills to work on.”
Clearly Gronkowski was toying with the media but he was also purposely trying to piss off Bill Belichick. It’s no secret that he is not happy with the rigid, all business M.O of the Patriots. Not only that but Gronkowski is also angling for a new contract. Acting like a jackass in front of the media to make the coach and the team look bad will not help his cause in terms of getting a new deal.
What Gronkowski did today made him look bad and it made the organization look bad. He would have been better off purposely avoiding questions about his future and just focusing on the event he was promoting. Instead, he tried to be funny and it blew up in his face.
Gronkowski’s schtick is getting old. It was ok for him to be a party animal and live life when he was 24 or 25 years old. At 28 going on 29, it’s time to grow up. Enough with the goofy antics and the attention seeking behavior. It’s stale.
Gronkowski skipping voluntary workouts and tap dancing around the topic of his future all off season is selfish. He’s not a team player. If he were, he would commit to playing next season and show up to off-season workouts and show the Patriots that he is worth investing in him beyond 2019. Instead, he’s played mind games and thumbed his nose at Bill Belichick.
I wouldn’t mind if the Patriots traded Gronkowski if the right offer came along, Belichick needs to consider it. His relationship with the all pro tight end is not what it once was. If Gronkowski doesn’t believe in the Patriot Way anymore, then it’s time to trade him.
Either way you look at it, Gronkowski and the Patriots are at a crossroads. Either Gronkowski buys in and he and the organization move on or it’s time for the Patriots to move on from Gronkowski.
