The Patriots drafted UCLA offensive tackle Conor McDermott with the 216th pick in the sixth round.
Here is my scouting report on McDermott.
Conor McDermott, OT, 6-8 3/4 307, UCLA
Initial Quickness: McDermott is decent out of his stance but he comes up too high. He is a waist bender and that could be a byproduct of the fact that he is 6-8. McDermott needs to work on bending at the knees and getting his butt down.
Run Block: McDermott is a good lateral run blocker. Gets good movement on reach blockers and he wash down defensive tackles on down blocks. Gets his head across and gets good movement. Struggles on drive blocks because he blocks high and exposes his chest.
Pass Block: McDermott has good feet but his base is too wide in his pass set. He needs to tighten it up and not be so heavy footed. Has strong hands and can punch, recoil and mirror. McDermott is high hipped and doesn’t sit on the stool in his pass set.
Pull & Trap: Sluggish when pulling. Lacks in the hole instincts and struggles to locate the defender he’s responsible for.
Use of Hands: McDermott has strong hands. Gets inside hand position and can extend. Has long arms and can create separation on contact.
Strength: McDermott is strong when engaged. Moves the pile on down blocks and mauls defenders. Struggles to anchor against bill rushers at times and gets worked back.
Explosion: McDermott doesn’t consistently finish blocks on the run game. Again, I hate to belabor the point but he plays too tall.
Final Report: McDermott is a former basketball player and tight end. Some times he plays like. He needs work fundamentally, especially when it comes to playing with proper bend and leverage. McDermott is a developmental project that should be on the practice squad this season.
