Celtics fans everywhere are probably disappointed that Danny Ainge didn’t make a trade yesterday but in retrospect, that was a good thing.
The Celtics are not a title contender. Even if they acquired Kevin Love or Al Horford, that wouldn’t be enough to make them a title contender. Maybe they get to the Eastern Conference Finals but that’s it. They don’t beat Cleveland in a seven game series and they definitely don’t beat Golden State in the finals.
Ainge did say today that the Celtics were close on a blockbuster trade but the teams they were dealing with pulled out last minute. I don’t know if I buy that. I’m sure Ainge was working the phones but you didn’t get the sense that a blockbuster deal was going down yesterday between any team. The rumors didn’t support it.
Look, the Celtics are getting closer to contender status but they are not quite there yet. They are a player or two away from being a true contender. Ainge can use the Brooklyn first round pick and what ever other assets he has left this summer to add the two players it’ll take to make the Celtics a contender again. He didn’t need to make those moves yesterday.
Patience is a virtue. Stay patient Celtics fans. The Celtics are getting there. They’re almost there. They’ve got plenty of ammo to take the next step and they will this summer. IN DANNY WE TRUST.
