The name Ayden Pereira is well known around New England.

The former Central Catholic star QB initially went to Maine before transferring to Merrimack for the past couple seasons. Now, he’s headed back to the transfer portal.

Last year with the Warriors, he threw for 1,846 yards and putting up 1,120 in 2024. He threw for 17 touchdowns total in his two seasons playing in North Andover, while also racking up 2,979 rushing yards combined at Maine and Merrimack. He’s also got nine career rushing TDs.

Pereira announced the decision on Tuesday and we caught up with him on Wednesday to find out why and see where he may be looking next, as well as what factors may play the biggest role in his decision when picking his next team:

NEFJ: Why’d you decide to hop in the portal?
AP: “I’m looking for a chance to compete to start and develop me to give me a shot at the NFL.”

NEFJ: Will staying local play a big role in the decision?
AP: “Staying local won’t play a big role to be honest with you.”

NEFJ: When do you hope to make a choice?
AP: “I hope to make a decision as soon as possible.”

The transfer portal is open from January 2nd up until January 16th, but players can choose to sign up through the spring and presumably, even after teams finish up spring ball. As one of the best dual threat QBs out of Massachusetts, Pereira should have plenty of interest from a bunch of schools.
