College Football: Top 16 Poll for Week One

Week one is in the books. Boston College was upset by Northern Illinois in disappointing fashion. Holy Cross and UNH held serve as the two best teams in the region while UMass and UConn both lost. URI and Sacred Heart both lost tough games while CCSU helped new Head Coach Adam Lechtenberg pick up his first win. URI lost a heartbreaker to Georgia State while Stonehill went through some growing pains at home.

Here is our Top 16 after Week One.

1.Holy Cross (1-0): The Crusaders were in a dog fight early against Merrimack but pulled away in the second half. Holy Cross visits Boston College this Saturday in what will be the 100th meeting of this once great rivalry.

2. New Hampshire (1-0): The Wildcats got off to a fast start and cruised to a 51-17 win at Stonehill. They travel to Central Michigan to take the Chips in what should be a stern test.

3. Yale (0-0): Bulldogs open in two weeks against Holy Cross.

4. UConn (0-1): The Huskies went toe to toe with N.C State but penalties and missed opportunities proved to be costly in a 24-14 loss to NC.State. Next up, a trip to Georgia State for the Huskies.

5. Rhode Island (0-1): Tough loss for the Rams in a game they could have won. They should hold their heads up high after a hard fought loss to Georgia State. Rhody hosts Stony Brook on Friday Night.

6. Harvard (0-0): Crimson open at Merrimack in two weeks.

7. UMass (1-1): Minutemen started off strong but then Auburn’s talent took over. The injury to quarterback Taisun Phommachanh is worth monitoring. The Minutemen return home this week for their home opener against Miami of Ohio.

8. Merrimack (0-1): The Warriors went toe to toe for three quarters with Holy Cross but watched the Crusaders pull away in the fourth quarter. There were a lot of positives for Dan Curran and staff to take away from the loss. The Warriors return home this week to host Lehigh.

9. Boston College (0-1): The loss to Northern Illinois was brutal and that is putting it mildly. Especially when you consider the fact that Boston College paid Northern Illinois $1.1 million to play. Holy Cross visits the Heights on Saturday.

10. Dartmouth (0-0): Big Green open their season in two weeks at UNH.

11. Bryant (0-1): Bulldogs were overmatched in a 44-14 loss to UNLV. The Bulldogs did some good things but have plenty to work on. They host LIU on Saturday in the home opener.

12. Sacred Heart (0-1): The Pioneers stormed back in the fourth quarter against Lafayette only to fall short 19-14. They will look to bounce back this week at Georgetown.

13. Brown (0-0): Brown opens in two weeks on the road against Bryant.

14. CCSU (1-0): The Blue Devils picked up a statement win over AIC in their season opener, 44-0. They will look to improve to 2-0 on the season when they host Stonehill.

15. Maine (0-1): Moral victories are not in thing in football but Maine losing 14-12 to FBS Florida International is a moral victory. The Black Bears look like they are going to be better than people thought. Next up,  a trip to North Dakota State to take on the Bison.

16. Stonehill (0-1): The Skyhawks battled as best they can against UNH but the Wildcats were just too much. They play the first of three straight road games this week at CCSU.
