The Ohio State administration is in an unenviable position. Regardless of what the outcome is in their investigation into allegations that Urban Meyer knew that former receivers coach Zach Smith assaulted his wife in 2015, they cannot make the “right” decision.
If the administration finds that Meyer knew about the incident through his wife Shelley and did nothing about it, they have to terminate him. If they find that Meyer honestly had no idea what was going on and do nothing, they will get lambasted for valuing winning above women. Either way, it is a P.R nightmare for the school.
Placing Meyer on administrative leave shows that the university is serious about getting to the bottom of this situation. Being placed on administrative leave is not good for Meyer. Typically when someone is placed on administrative leave, they are usually terminated.
Based on the information Brett McMurphy unearthed, there is no plausible way Meyer didn’t know what was going on with Smith and his wife. That is why I truly believe there is no way Meyer survives this.
Football is king at Ohio State but regardless of that, the administration cannot make a decision based on the program. They have to do the right thing. If Meyer was covering for his boy, he can’t lead the program moving forward. He shouldn’t coach any program for that matter.
No one knows how long the investigation will take but regardless of how long it takes, the administration at Ohio State better make the right decision because if they don’t, the impact of their decision could have long lasting ramifications.
