How many of you had Bill Belichick interviewing for the North Carolina opening? I know I didn’t see that coming and chances are, neither did you.
Belichick interviewing for a college job makes zero sense considering that outside of being around the Navy Football program, he has no college experience. Sure, he has plenty of college connections but those relationships are built on evaluating players, not coaching at the collegiate level.
Belichick clearly took the interview as a way to remind NFL teams that he still wants to coach and is ready to get back in the game. I do not believe for one second that Belichick is “genuinely” interested in the North Carolina job. He is not.
If the changing landscape in college football was too much for Nick Saban to deal with, why would Belichick do any better? He wouldn’t. Many of the same issues that frustrated Saban would frustrate Belichick.
Belichick deserves another shot but not in college football. He needs to be in the NFL again. He is the greatest coach of all time. He should be trying to win Super Bowls, not the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
It is no surprise Belichick impressed the administration at North Carolina. Unfortunately for them, even if they offered him the job, he would not take it. Bottom line, Belichick wanted to polish up on his interviewing skills and they wanted to say they interviewed Belichick. That’s it.
Now Belichick can turn his attention to the NFL and get ready to interview for several of the openings that will be available come January 5th.
