According to NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran, the Patriots have already decided to part ways with Bill Belichick after this season.
Curran reported on Arbella’s Early Edition earlier tonight that the Patriots made the decision the week after the loss to the Colts in Germany.
“When they came out of Germany, conversations I had that week made it very clear that a decision was made.” Curran continued: “They were going to play out the string, and at the end of the year there would be a parting of the ways, for a variety of reasons.”
Curran is well connected to the organization so I doubt this came out of nowhere. For him to say this, he must have it on good authority that a decision has been made.
That being said, I also do not see how something like this would be leaked to the media. The Kraft family cares about public perception. They want to control the narrative. The last thing they want is to be vilified publicly for mistreating Belichick at the end of his tenure in New England.
It is why I have maintained all along that I think this will be a mutual parting. If both sides decide it is time to move on, that is how it will be presented.
It is more than plausible that the Krafts have decided it is time for a change. I have no doubt about that. I highly doubt however that someone in the organization would let that out of of the building.
We will all know how this plays in about a month from now. Until then, all we can do is speculate. That is why I do not think a decision on Belichick’s future has been made.
The only decision that was made was to let him coach out the season.
