Malik Cunningham signed by Ravens off practice squad

Thanks for the week or so of memories, Malik Cunningham.

Cunningham’s performance in a preseason game against Houston seemingly could have materialized into something more eventually given the issues at QB for the Patriots this season, but it never happened. Cunningham was elevated from the practice squad in each of the last two games, but never played.

Now, he’s off to Baltimore.

The Ravens signed the rookie QB to their roster on Tuesday afternoon,, adding him to a room with Lamar Jackson – his former teammate for a year at Louisville – Tyler Huntley and Josh Johnson.

“I wanted to thank Mr. Kraft and Coach Bill Belichick for giving me an opportunity to play with the Patriots,” Cunningham told ESPN. “I learned a lot from them. I want to be a coach one day, so I would take notes from coach Belichick because he’s one of the the greatest of all time. I had great teammates in New England and built relationships that will last a lifetime. But I feel like this is a good opportunity for me and I’m excited to be a Raven.”

Many of Cunningham’s now former teammates immediately took to Instagram to wish him well and express their love for him. One particular comment from Trent Brown was extremely interesting.

“Go flourish where your talent is respected lil bradda,” he wrote on his story with a tag of Adam Schefter’s post regarding the breaking news.

Obviously, Cunningham will be sitting behind Lamar Jackson for quite some time assuming health, but the ability for him to develop strictly as a quarterback with someone he’s very familiar with was most likely the biggest factor. After the experiment at wide receiver here in Foxborough, how can that situation not be more appealing?

From the Patriots’ perspective, if Bailey Zappe turns out to be better than we all thought and can be serviceable next year either as a starter (I believe there’s a path for him to be the Day 1 QB1) or back up, then this probably isn’t a big loss. But, if things turn ugly again for this offense against KC, Denver, Buffalo and New York, the misuse of Cunningham’s clear athleticism with nothing to lose down the stretch could end up being a big mistake in a growing list of them at the most important position.
