Kickoff: The Massachusetts Pirates (3-5) are set to make their first-ever trip to the Hoosier State tonight as they square off against the Fishers Freight (2-7) at the Fishers Event Center. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 PM ET. This marks a pivotal mid-season contest for both teams, as the Pirates look to improve their record and the Freight aim for revenge and a much-needed win.
This isn’t the first time these two teams have met this season. The Pirates handed the Freight their first-ever franchise loss back on April 12th, a thrilling 50-47 victory at the Tsongas Center. Since then, the Freight have struggled, dropping their last seven games, and will be hungry to turn their fortunes around on their home turf.
Four Downs: Four Keys for the Pirates
1st Down: Pirates’ Offense vs. Freight’s Defense: The Pirates’ offense, led by quarterback Kenji Bahar, has been a work in progress this season. Their passing game has had its ups and downs, but when they’re clicking, they can put up points in a hurry. The Freight’s defense will need to contain the Pirates’ playmakers and force turnovers.
2nd Down: Freight’s Offense (especially Shane Simpson) vs. Pirates’ Defense: Shane Simpson is a game-changer for the Freight. The Pirates’ defense will need to be disciplined in their run fits and limit his explosive plays. Getting pressure on Freight quarterback Jiya Wright will also be crucial, as he can extend plays with his legs and arm.
3rd Down: Special Teams Battle: In indoor football, special teams can often be the difference-maker. Field goals, kick returns, and even deuces can swing momentum and points rapidly. Both teams will need to be sharp in this phase of the game.
4th Down: Start fast, finish strong: For the Pirates, a win would be a significant step towards a .500 record and improving their playoff positioning. It would also solidify their recent surge and prove they can win on the road. For the Freight, a victory would be a huge morale boost, ending their losing skid and providing a much-needed confidence injection as they try to salvage their season.
Extra Point: The Pirates started Fisher’s even game slide with their 50-47 come from behind win in April.
Final Drive: Massachusetts comes into this game with a bit of momentum, having snapped a three-game losing streak with a convincing 43-29 win over the Jacksonville Sharks on May 29th. That win saw the Pirates’ offense explode for 22 points in the second quarter, their highest single-quarter output of the season, a sign that their new head coach, Tom Menas, is getting things to click. The Fishers Freight, despite their recent struggles, showed flashes of potential in their last outing, a loss to the Green Bay Blizzard. Star running back Shane Simpson, who was not with the Freight during their first encounter with the Pirates, showcased his impact with three touchdowns and 46 rushing yards. His presence adds a significant weapon to the Freight’s offense, and they will undoubtedly look to utilize him heavily against the Pirates’ defense.
If the defense plays well, specifically in the second half, the Pirates should be in a good spot to pick up a much needed win as they look to stay in the playoff hunt.
