Tabor 44, Belmont Hill 12 — Seawolves roll to victory

MARION — According to Tabor running back Hugo Djeumeni, coach Jeff Moore said he did not want the Seawolves to merely win this year, but dominate.

In Saturday’s ISL game with Belmont Hill, Djeumeni and his teammates lived up to that standard.

In a complete game in every facet, Tabor rolled to a 44-12 victory over Belmont Hill.

Now 6-0, the Seawolves are on a collision course with BB&N in a tilt between two perfect ISL teams. Tabor heads to BB&N next weekend. A win there, and Tabor could be looking at a perfect season in Moore’s second year in Marion.

“I think that’s what we’re aiming to do,” Djeumeni said. “Obviously, 6-0 this week, it looks good on paper. We have to finish next week.”

Djeumeni finished with 210 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 28 carries. He also caught a 44-yard touchdown reception. Quarterback Peter Bourque completed 10 of 22 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns. Bourque also rushed for a 33-yard score in the third quarter.

The defense forced four turnovers, including interceptions by Luke Demaso and Marcus Almada.

Belmont Hill (4-2) had a strong performance from quarterback Reis Little, who threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

It was a total team effort for the Seawolves.

“A great, full football game for us,” Moore said. “Very little mistakes on defense. We’ve got to stay onside, obviously. But, on offense, we took care of the football. For the vast majority, on defense we kept the ball in front of us. Our goal is to make them drive the ball 65, 70 yards every series. Our special teams did a great job of pinning them deep.”

The Seawolves got to it right away, forcing a punt on the first Belmont Hill drive. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Djeumeni found a seam and raced for a 44-yard touchdown to help give his team a 7-0 lead.

Following the Demaso interception, Tabor got down to the Belmont Hill 1, and Garrett Salit booted a 20-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

Belmont Hill found some life, as Little connected with Jordan Summers on a 59-yard touchdown to make it 10-6.

That’s as close as it got the rest of the way, though. Bourque found Djeumeni out of the backfield for a 44-yard touchdown down the right side as Tabor boosted its lead to 17-6.

In the second quarter, Bourque hit tight end Liam Hubacz for a 12-yard touchdown to make it 23-6.

Then, in what had to be a coverage breakdown, Dameer Phifer found himself wide open in the secondary, and Bourque found him for a 40-yard touchdown as Tabor took a 30-6 lead into the half.

Bourque added his touchdown run on the first drive of the second half.

“The guys up front, they set the tone handling everyone,” Bourque said. “The run game with Hugo, when he’s smashing the ball down their throat, then we can throw the ball. They stack the box, I’ll take my receivers over their (defensive backs) any day.”

Little tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Luis Kuehberger, then Djeumeni capped it with an 18-yard touchdown.

Now comes BB&N for the Seawolves, who would be hard-pressed to be playing any better heading into that game.
