The Patriots visit the 49ers today in what is the ultimate match-up game. San Francisco presents a variety of problems at multiple positions.
The offensive line will have their hands full with Nick Bosa and the rest of the defense. It will be tough for them to
Left Tackle vs. Nick Bosa: It doesn’t matter who lines up across from Bosa in this game, he will win one on one. The Patriots will have to account for Bosa on every snap. They really should commit three bodies to his side on every pass play. If they don’t, he will wreck their passing game plan. Running at Bosa is highly recommended as well.
Christian Gonzalez vs. Brandon Aiyuk: Gonzalez struggled against Garrett Wilson at times and will need to play better today. Luckily, Aiyuk looks rusty thus far and he might need time to round into form. The Patriots can blend coverages and lock Gonzalez on him one on one all afternoon. These are the match ups Gonzalez needs to win to gain the confidence of the coaching staff.
Kyle Dugger vs. George Kittle: We will see a lot of this match-up today. Kittle is coming back from injury but he presents problems for safeties because of how much he moves around formations and his route running. Dugger has to be disciplined in his backpedal, time his route breaks and compete in contested catch situations.
Keion White vs. Colton McKivitz: One of the few match ups the Patriots should own. White should work over McKivitz all afternoon. The Patriots have to get him on the right side as much as possible. The other reason, it gets him away from Trent Williams, the best left tackle in the game.
Covington vs. Shanahan: Many consider Shanahan the best play caller in football. He is the father of the modern west coast offense. The 49ers create conflict with motion and shifting so the Patriots are going to have so communicate well and they are going to have to adjust appropriately. The biggest key is to not get outflanked, especially off-tackle. Shanahan will look to exploit the edges.
