Cheshire Academy EDGE Jacob Smith announced earlier today that he is going to be joining his brother Jerod and committing to the University of Michigan. Jerod Smith committed to Michigan on April 25th.

The Smith brothers made headlines earlier this off-season when they decided to transfer from Loomis-Chafee to Cheshire Academy. They along with quarterback Dante Reno who is a South Carolina commit transferred because they could graduate early from Cheshire something they could not do if they stayed at Loomis. By graduating early, all three could enroll to their respective schools early and participate in spring practice.

In Jerod and Jacob Smith, Michigan is getting two talented edge rushers who are explosive and can rush the passer. They play with good bend and leverage and can set an edge in the run game. Both have a raw skill set and will need a little more time to develop physically but once they do, they will terrorize the Big Ten.

Jerod had 27 offers while Jacob had 28 offers. Both were recruited by many of the same schools, a who’s who of Power 5 blue bloods. In the end, the allure of playing together was too much to pass up. Now the two brothers will continue their careers together and look to make an impact for the Wolverines.

As for this upcoming season, Cheshire will be among the favorites both in the Founders League and in New England. The Smith Brothers will play a pivotal role in the program’s success as they look to leave a mark before their high school careers end.

Physically, Jacob is the longer of the two brothers and profiles more as a true edge player. Jerod could eventually transition to off ball linebacker and play the SAM or the WILL. Regardless of where they play, the two brothers will make an impact.
