Two weeks ago, some people around these parts were calling the Bruins and Celtics potential titles contenders. The Bruins had just gone toe to toe with Chicago and Washington, the two best teams in the NHL and proved that they could play with them. The Celtics were in the midst of a 14 game home winning streak and many NBA pundits were talking about them as a potential threat to the Cleveland Cavaliers. My how times have changed.
Since then, the Bruins have been swept on a three game west coast swing by San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles and look like a middle of the pack team. The Celtics lost Jae Crowder to an ankle injury last week and they’ve lost four games in a row. Both teams are struggling at the worst possible time. You want to be playing your best heading into the playoffs. That’s not the case with the Bruins and Celtics.
The realty is, neither one of these teams is a championship caliber team. Both teams have overachieved this season. It’s just that were so used to winning championships around here that when a team starts to play well and win a couple of big games, we assume they are a title contender because they’re from Boston. It’s not the way it works.
Could the Bruins and Celtics win a round in the playoffs? Sure but that’s as far as they’ll go in my opinion. If by chance they manged to win two rounds, then that would be a great season because neither team will get by their respective roadblocks in the Capitals and Cavs. The Bruins and Celtics have struggled against both teams in the playoffs in the past.
I’m sure people probably think I’m being a Negative Norm but I’m just telling it like it is. I don’t think either team is championship caliber. They’ve both overachieved and both may have finally hit that wall. I’m just saying.
