Back to (semi) normal football coverage on Wednesday.
The first official voluntary OTA is slated for mid-afternoon down in Foxborough, with Mike Vrabel set to meet the media at 11:30 and then Drake Maye, Rhamondre Stevenson and Milton Williams slated to speak following practice around 2:00 p.m.
While the crap storm that has been the offseason for Vrabel will certainly come up on Wednesday, once he speaks before the first team OTA, it’s hard to believe much more will come of it as things on the football field start to develop, albeit at a very slow and not-real-intense pace.
No definitive answers are out there in late May, but we could start to get a little inkling of certain things over the next few practices that the media gets to attend.
Here’s what we’ll be looking for…
1. Drake Maye’s shoulder
The videos the team have put out look fine. He’s said he’s fine in a couple of interviews. But, it’ll be nice just to see it for ourselves on Wednesday. The last image I have of him personally is Maye sitting about 10 feet from me with a clear hole where a needle went before the Super Bowl, holding back tears in his postgame press conference. I was one of those that believed it was a non-issue going into that game. I could not have been more wrong. He’s young and you gotta think he’s fine long term, but it’ll still be comforting to see him sling it a little bit with no problems.
2. Lomu and Campbell
For obvious reasons at rookie minicamp, Lomu repped solely at left tackle. Now that all the guys will be out there, is it Campbell left and Lomu right like we’ve all been told? To they rotate? Do they swap? On one hand, I wouldn’t put it past Vrabel to mess with us and the fans and swap them, but he seems pretty damn tied in to Campbell at least starting the season at LT, so I think we’ll see him there and Lomu on the right side over the course of the next couple weeks.
3. The receivers
So, this is interesting. The media gets to see six practices total. That means after Wednesday, the next one (6/2) could technically have AJ Brown in it. Does Pop Douglas or Kyle Williams pop early on in the spring? Does Kayshon Boutte show up? (Highly doubt it). Does Efton Chism create more of a role? If AJ Brown does show up, is that it? Could Stefon Diggs still be on the table? Ultimately, the movement within this group could be absolutely fascinating between now and training camp in August. I’ll be watching closely to see who has that early chemistry with Maye as well.
4. Christian Gonzalez
I think he’ll be there? But, do we get the start of a mini hold in from the star corner? He obviously proved his worth in the Super Bowl, although Sam Darnold did under throw JSN a couple times after Gonzo was beat…BUT, I don’t think you’ll get any animosity yet. I think Vrabel and Gonzalez started off on the wrong foot last year and both were a little bit prickish to each other during the injury thing in camp, but ultimately he got through to Gonzalez and Gonzalez even admitted late in the season it took a while to get used to Vrabel’s humor. As long as he believes the Pats are negotiating in good faith and not dragging things along (even though they really DON’T have to extend him yet), I think it’s all good with Gonzo.
5. Rookies
This class doesn’t have to have the impact that last year’s did, but it’d be nice if a few guys popped. Jam Miller is really interesting to me as a possible weapon out of the backfield or even lined up as a receiver for Josh McDaniels. We already talked about Lomu and his importance is obviously huge. Dametrious Crownover is an absolute monster and if he can develop into something, may be a steal for the next 4-5 years up front. Gabe Jacas didn’t participate in rookie minicamp, hopefully he does here because we’d love to see that speed in person. Do we see the big tight end out of Notre Dame Eli Raridon? Karon Prunty at DB and Namdi Obiazor could be impactful at some point too. The Pats certainly need some new faces to step up at linebacker after some departures in the offseason.
