FOXBOROUGH- Quarterback Behren Morton was the only quarterback at Patriots rookie minicamp this past weekend. It may seem strange but being the only quarterback benefitted Morton tremendously.
“It’s great, a lot of reps, which has been really beneficial right now. And then when we start Monday, you know, reps will go down, but learning from, you know, Tom Brady and the guys that have played in this offense, it’s really cool to see. The film that I get to watch, there is a lot of cool stuff in this offense and I’m really excited to learn it.”
Morton is coming from a spread offense in college which was based on Air Raid concepts. You see his experience playing in that offense on the field, especially when he throws the ball in the middle of the field. He shows good touch and anticipation on layered routes.
A lot of Morton learned in college as a multi-year starter can be applied to what he is learning now. Despite that, he is new to the Patriots offense and he says it is important to grow at each practice and not make the same mistakes.
” It was good. You take things that you messed up the day before and not make the same mistake. Just learning from my mistakes on day one. It’s been a really good time so far. A lot of studying but this is my job now, so you take this personally.”
One of the benefits of being the only quarterback in camp is working with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Morton says he is making the most of the opportunity to work with one of the best offensive minds in the game.
” Just being a sponge. Ask as many questions as I can right now. Learning this playbook is very dense, but I get the opportunity to ask questions right now while it’s just me in the quarterback room. I get to maximize my opportunity right now.”
Morton seems to be making the most of his opportunity early on and that bodes well for him moving forward. He checks off every box in terms of leadership and I.Q. The physical tools are there and the Patriots are the perfect organization to take into them.
