Patriots sign fullback Reggie Gilliam to three year deal

The Patriots reached an agreement with former Buffalo Bills fullback Reggie Gilliam on the opening day of the legal tampering period. The deal is reportedly a three-year contract worth up to $12 million, including $6 million in total guarantees and a $4.4 million payout in the first year.

By signing Gilliam, the Patriots are not only poaching a key divisional rival’s asset but also doubling down on the physical, run-heavy philosophy favored by head coach Mike Vrabel and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Gilliam arrives in Foxborough as one of the premier lead blockers in the NFL, fresh off a season where he helped propel Buffalo to the league’s top rushing rank. His impact is backed by more than just the eye test; last season, he earned the highest Pro Football Focus grades among all fullbacks in both run and pass blocking. For a Patriots rushing attack that finished 14th in yards per carry last year, Gilliam provides the veteran “thumper” necessary to clear lanes for Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, particularly in short-yardage and goal-line situations where the team occasionally sputtered.

Beyond his offensive utility, Gilliam is a foundational special teams player, having logged at least 77% of his team’s special teams snaps in each of the last five seasons. This dual-threat capability makes him a prototypical “Vrabel player”—a versatile, high-effort veteran who provides locker room leadership and reliable production across multiple phases of the game.

While the Patriots already have younger options like Jack Westover and Brock Lampe on the roster, the significant financial commitment to Gilliam suggests he will immediately step into the starting role, potentially allowing Westover to transition back to his natural tight end position.

This signing marks the second major move for New England on day one of free agency, following the addition of edge rusher Dre’Mont Jones.

By investing in a fullback, the Patriots are signaling a return to a “power” football that seeks to control the clock and physically dominate the line of scrimmage. Gilliam should fit right in both on the field and in the locker room.
