Patriots quarterback Drake Maye offered a staunch defense of his head coach, Mike Vrabel, on Wednesday, dismissing concerns regarding the coach’s recent off-field absence and personal matters.

Speaking to the media following a Pro-Am event at the Truist Championship in Charlotte, Maye emphasized the strong bond between the locker room and the coaching staff, specifically highlighting Vrabel’s character during a period of outside scrutiny.

Maye’s comments come at a time when rumors of internal friction and “off-field issues” have dominated the local news cycle in New England. Despite the noise, the young franchise quarterback made it clear that the players remain firmly behind their leader. Maye pushed back against the idea that the situation would become a distraction as the team prepares to defend its status as the reigning AFC Champions following their Super Bowl LX appearance.

“I know he’s got the right mindset and I know he’s a great human being,” Maye said when asked about the challenges facing his coach. “I think he’s… like I said, I love playing for him.”

The quarterback’s endorsement was not just about wins and losses, but about the personal relationship Vrabel has built with his players. Maye elaborated on the atmosphere in Foxborough, noting that Vrabel has maintained open lines of communication with the roster despite his recent time away from the team, including his absence from the 2026 NFL Draft.

“We’re here for Coach. We love Coach. What he does for us, what he’s done for us this past year, you can’t speak into words. Thankful he’s our head coach. And I know he’s dealing with some stuff off the field, and out of the coaching world, but we’re here for him and I know he’s gonna come back,” Maye told reporters.

When questioned further on whether the team would struggle to move past the current headlines before the start of the 2026 season, Maye remained unbothered. He expressed total confidence in Vrabel’s ability to lead the team through the noise.

“No, I don’t,” Maye said regarding the potential for a distraction. “I mean, he’s our head coach. I think he’s done a great job of talking to us and talking us through it. I’m just looking forward to getting back to work and getting ready. I think that’ll take care of itself.”

The public display of support serves as a significant boost for Vrabel. With Maye coming off a Pro Bowl season and a deep playoff run, his words carry immense weight in a building that has historically valued a “next man up” and “do your job” mentality. For Maye, the job currently includes ensuring the culture established by his coach remains intact, regardless of the narrative outside the stadium walls.
