The Patriots made a significant splash in the late hours of the first day of free agency, reportedly reaching an agreement with former New York Jets offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.
The deal is structured as a three-year contract worth $42 million, with incentives that could push the total value up to $48 million.
By landing the former 14th overall pick, New England addresses a critical need on the interior of their offensive line following a season where pass protection for quarterback Drake Maye became an issue, particularly during their recent playoff run.
Vera-Tucker arrives in Foxborough with a “high-risk, high-reward” reputation. When healthy, he has proven to be one of the most versatile and effective interior blockers in the league, evidenced by his 2024 campaign where he was ranked as one of the top guards in the league by Pro Football Focus. However, his career has been defined by a series of significant injuries, including two torn triceps and a torn Achilles, which caused him to miss the 2025 season. The Patriots are clearly betting on his 26-year-old frame to hold up, prioritizing his elite athleticism and scheme-agnostic talent to solidify the unit.
Vera-Tucker is expected to slot in at left guard, playing alongside 2025 first-round tackle Will Campbell and Jared Wilson who is moving to center, filling the void left by Garrett Bradbury, who was traded to the Chicago Bears on Friday. By placing a high-upside veteran like Vera-Tucker between their young building blocks, the Patriots hope to provide the stability necessary to keep Maye more upright in 2026.
Thus far through one day of free agency, the Patriots have focused on the offensive and defensive line but that focus will shift now to receiver and the secondary as day two of free agency begins on Tuesday.
