A flat out winner. McCarthy only lost one game at Michigan. Has won a championship at every level of football McCarthy has played in. He is a winner. Plain and simple.
Here is my scouting report on J.J McCarthy.
J.J McCarthy, QB, 6-2 219, Michigan
Arm Strength: Strong arm. McCarthy can put some zip on the ball. Has good velocity and zip on his ball. Can add and subtract when needed. Can make all the requisite playbook NFL throws with ease.
Set Up Quicks: Good athlete. Well coached in the pocket. Smooth in his drop. Can gather, keep his feet moving and and stepping up and delivering the ball on time.
Accuracy: Inconsistent accuracy. McCarthy is accurate on the run but his accurate runs hot and cold in the middle of the field. Throws an easy, catchable ball but needs to work on his anticipation.
Field Vision: Works through his progression quickly. Is able to hang, work through his reads and put the ball where he needs to. Does have a tendency to lock onto a receiver and take sacks.
Running Ability: A threat to break contain and extend plays. Can run when things breakdown or on designed runs. Avoids the rush and does a good job of resetting the pocket.
Delivery: Clean, smooth delivery. No hitches. His release is quick and his arm angles are good. Can make off-platform throws.
Ball Handling: Best in this class. Smooth and clean. Drives the ball, comes off the fake tall and is in the throwing position.
Leadership: A winner. McCarthy doesn’t lose games. Mature beyond his years. Teammates rally around him and look up to him. Poised. Has proven he can play under pressure.
Final Report: McCarthy is the most maligned prospect in this draft. Despite that, he has taken it all in stride, worked hard and prepared for his opportunity. I think the Patriots like him and while Drake Maye is probably going to be their pick, something tells me McCarthy would be second on their board.
Draft Range: 1st Round
