Top 50 Patriots Prospects: #48: Jason Maitre, CB, Wisconsin (B.C)

The former Everett standout and Boston College cornerback met with the Patriots at a local pro day and is firmly on their radar as a possible late round pick or as an undrafted free agent. Maitre transferred to Wisconsin after the 2022 season and had a solid 2023 campaign for the Badgers racking up 33 total tackles, 3 pass break ups and an interception.

Maitre worked out at the Boston College Pro Day on March 22nd. He ran a 4.58 forty, had a 37 inch vertical and broad jumped 10-3. He looked smooth and fluid in his movements during drills and at 5-10 181 pounds, he can play in the slot or outside.

Here is our scouting report on Jason Maitre

Jason Maitre, CB,  5-10 181, Wisconsin

Man to Man Coverage: Maitre has the movement skills to be effective in man coverage. Can flip his hips with ease and maintain hip position as he transitions. Stays in phase and has shown he can compete in one on one situations. He does struggle versus bigger receivers. Needs to do a better job high pointing the ball.

Zone Coverage: Plays with good awareness in zone coverage. Recognizes routes and has shown he can come off of other routes and defend receivers in an area. Shows good range and an ability to read the top of routes, read the quarterback and break on the ball.

Closing Quickness: Good closing quickness. Maitre has good feet. He can read a route break well, plant and drive on the ball. He does guess at times and gets caught out of position.

Key & Diagnose: Smart. Maitre played in a versatile scheme under Jeff Hafley so he has played in man, zone and match coverages. Anticipates routes developing and breaks at the right time. Ideally suited to play as a squat Cover 2 because of his recognition skills.

Lateral Pursuit: Moves well laterally and takes the proper pursuit angle. Lacks the elite, high end speed to catch up with ball carriers from the back side.

Tackling: Willing tackler who breaks down, wraps up and can finish on contact. Maitre will drop his hips late at times and tackle high. He is not a physical, “Power” tackler.

Pass Drop: Maitre is clean in his pass drops. He is smooth and easily transitions when he flips his hips and runs vertically.

Hands/Ball Skills: Maitre has plus hands for a defensive back. He attacks the ball and can secure it in contested catch situations. He has played receiver before so he understands how to turn into a skill player on a pick.

Final Report: Maitre profiles as a long slot corner who can also play outside. He doesn’t jump off the tape athletically but he is smart, fundamentally sound and tough. He can also play special teams which is an added bonus.

Draft Range: 6th Round-UDFA
