Manu is one of two offensive tackle prospects from the University of British Columbia. The other is Theo Benedict who is also getting the attention of front office executives and scouts.
Manu is massive. He has primarily played tackle in his college career but could kick inside and play guard as well. He profiles more as a right tackle.
Here is my scouting report on Giovanni Manu
Giovanni Manu, OT, 6-8 352, University of British Columbia
Initial Quicks: Manu has average get off. He resets the line of scrimmage if he gets inside hand position and can use his length but he is not consistent in this area.
Run Block: Physical run blocker who gets good movement on single blocks and double teams. Not a natural bender. Tends to block high and he loses leverage and control. Manu has balance issues at times because of his length.
Pass Block: Manu has good feet. Sets quick and does a good job of staying patient in his kick slide. He does have a tendency to lunge and and give up an edge. Does a good job of mirroring and punching which is good if he ends up moving inside.
Pull & Trap: Moves well in short areas and can get his head outside on lateral zone blocks. Did not pull much and needs to prove he can do that at the next level.
Use of Hands: Manu gets separation with his punch. Heavy handed. He can displace defenders off the line of scrimmage. Manu does a good job of keeping defenders off balance once he made contact.
Strength: Manu is strong. He is a mauler on single blocks. If he can ever learn to play with more bend and balance, he can be a devastating run blocker.
Explosion: Manu can be explosive once he engages but he doesn’t come out of his stance as quick as you’d like so that limits his explosiveness.
Final Report: Manu is a work in project. He needs a lot of work. However, if the right offensive line coach gets his hands on him and teaches the finer points of offensive line play, he could be a swing tackle or even a possible starter.
