A three year starter at Baylor, Hall could play the three technique defensive tackle in a 40 front and kick outside to a five technique defensive end in a 30 front. Hall had some ups and downs at Baylor but he put himself on the map with a solid Senior Bowl performance. He really caught coaches, scouts and talent evaluators attention and proved that he could be a difference maker.
Here is my scouting report on Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall, DE, 6-6 294, Baylor
Vs. Run: Ideally suited to be a one gap penetrator who can win with power on the snap. Plays with good get off and power at the point of attack. Can stack and shed blockers and uses his length to his advantage.
Pass Rush: Not an elite pass rusher. Hall wins with power as a bull rusher. Rushes with good lean for his size and he can get in and out of moves based on how he is being blocked. Hall lacks the closing speed you look for in pass rushers.
Pursuit: Moves well laterally for his size and can play along the line of scrimmage and be disruptive. Drops his pad level and plays faster than his size when chasing from the back side.
Tackling: A wrap up and drag tackler. Hall should be a more forceful and physical tackler but he is not always playing to his size and power. Tends to tackle high and require a second helmet to the ball.
Initial Quicks: Hall has good quickness on the snap for his size. Resets the line of scrimmage with his body position. He anticipates the snap and is able to get his hands on blockers and control them.
Recognition: Needs to play with a better feel for blocks. Tends to struggle with getting off of reach and down blocks. Comes out of his stance high at times and doesn’t recognize blocks the way he should.
Neutralize Blocks: Stays on blocks too long at times. Again, it is because he is coming out of stance high and he struggles to disengage at times. He needs to improve in this area. His inability to split double teams and disconnect from certain blocks is the biggest issue in his game.
Key & Diagnose: As I mentioned earlier, he does not play with the requisite recognition skills you look for in an interior defensive lineman. he needs to see blocks develop better and he needs to be more aggressive once he does recognize them.
Final Report: Hall is talented and when he is on, he is one of the toughest defensive lineman to block in this class. He needs to be more consistent and he needs to play with a lower pad level. If he does that, he has the potential to possibly end up a starter. Hall is a great fit in the Patriots scheme because of his alignment versatility.
Draft Range: 4th-5th
